From Local Roots to Exceptional Builds: Masstown Market’s Partnership with EasCan Building Systems
We recently sat down with Ron Smith, Director of Business Development at Masstown Market, to discuss his experience working with EasCan Building Systems. Masstown Market, a family-owned business since 1969, has become a staple in Nova Scotia, celebrated for its innovation and community focus. Ron shared his insights on how EasCan’s team helped bring their vision to life, the benefits of working with a local partner, and why EasCan remains a trusted collaborator for large-scale projects.
1. Can you share your experience working with EasCan and how the partnership began?
Ron: “Masstown Market has a long history of supporting local businesses, so it made sense to partner with EasCan, who is right here in our community. When we decided to build the Creamery and Butchery building—a 15,000 square foot steel structure—we contacted them directly without shopping around. Their team handled everything, from design and drafting to assembly, making the process seamless for us. It was truly a one-stop shop, and as someone without a construction background, I can’t overstate how much of a relief that was.”
2. What was it like working with EasCan’s team?
Ron: “They were fantastic to work with, from top to bottom. I remember one of their foremen on-site who was incredibly patient with my questions. I’m not a construction expert, but he took the time to explain everything—why they were doing certain things, how the process worked—and that level of communication stood out. You could tell their crew enjoyed working together. Even in tough conditions, like knee-deep in mud or the dead of winter, they’d be laughing and joking. That kind of team dynamic is hard to find, and it made a lasting impression.”
3. What unique benefits does EasCan bring to a project like yours?
Ron: “One of the biggest advantages was having that face-to-face connection. If we needed to meet, we could drive down to their office or they’d come here to view the project. The fact that they’re local meant we shared the same vendors, the same neighborhoods, and the same values. Their single point of contact made everything easier. I didn’t have to coordinate between multiple people or hire external engineers—they handled it all. The exterior structure went up without a hitch, and everything was delivered as promised.”
4. Would you recommend EasCan to others, and why?
Ron: “Absolutely. I’ve had people ask who did the work on our building, and I’ve been happy to recommend EasCan every time. They’re professional, local, and incredibly reliable. The work they did for us was done right the first time, and eight years later, we haven’t had to call them back for any issues. That speaks volumes. It’s not just about the quality of their work, though—it’s the trust they build with you. When they say they’re going to do something, they do it. And that’s a rare thing in the construction world.”
