5 Questions with Andrew Anderson: Insights from the Owner and President of EasCan Building Systems
1. How did you come to lead EasCan Building Systems, and what attracted you to this business?
Andrew: “I was chasing planes overseas in the oil and gas business when I realized that wasn’t the life I wanted. I looked at businesses across industries, from nursing homes to residential construction, before finding EasCan. It was a natural fit, given my 22 years of experience working with iron. What stood out most were the people, phenomenal individuals with so much potential. I saw opportunities to improve, erase ‘we can’t’ from the language, and build a service-focused, can-do company. Since 2020, we’ve doubled the business by focusing on people and delivering on promises.”
2. What makes EasCan unique in the steel construction industry, particularly for your customers?
Andrew: “It’s about understanding priorities and adapting to meet critical timelines. Other companies might work strictly in queues, but we assess what truly needs to be done first. Transparency is key, being upfront with customers about challenges and solutions. For example, if a customer wants something rushed, we break down how that impacts their project. Nine times out of ten, they appreciate the clarity. That trust and our commitment to delivering what we promise differentiate us. We’re not just a supplier; we’re partners who look at the whole project to add value beyond our scope.”
3. How has your global experience shaped the culture at EasCan?
Andrew: “I’ve worked across 30 countries with diverse nationalities and cultures. Each experience taught me something valuable about respect, collaboration, and efficiency. At EasCan, we’ve created a culture that values learning and adapting. We’ve erased ‘we always did it that way’ from our mindset. East Coast Canada is a place where people commit 100% to a project, and that can-do attitude drives us. Once you get buy-in and align perspectives, you can move mountains.”
4. What role does collaboration play in EasCan’s approach to business?
Andrew: “Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. When I started, I reached out to competitors and turned some into partners. Now, we’re co-creating projects with former competitors and focusing on what each of us does best. For our customers, we bring solutions to the table—even outside our scope. It’s about adding value and building trust. When a customer calls at 9 p.m. with a question about roofing or growth challenges, that’s not just a transaction; that’s a partnership. And that’s what drives repeat business.”
5. What are you most proud of at EasCan?
Andrew: “The people. From the folks standing iron in the middle of winter to the ones working behind the scenes, they’ve adapted and evolved through significant changes. They’re out there singing songs and having fun, even on tough days. That attitude reflects our culture, serious when it comes to delivering results but lighthearted enough to enjoy the process. It’s their hard work and dedication that make the buildings seem to ‘magically appear.’ They’re the backbone of EasCan.”
